Just as God destroyed the evil in the earth by the flood (Genesis 6) He is still using His river to cleanse the state of every sinner & renew every believer. 

Jesus said if we drink of Him we'll have rivers of living water flowing from our belly (John 4) that will rush sinners to repentance. 
Our obedience in baptism is a symbol of God's use of water to drown the enemies of Israel as they fled Egypt. Jesus has even promised to cleanse us with the water of His word (Eph 5) so he can present us without blemish to the Father.
